Deck Restoration Geelong: Get Your Deck Summer-Ready

Summer on the Bellarine and Surf Coast means long evenings outside, and your deck is where most of that happens. After a wet Geelong winter, though, most timber decks look tired: grey boards, peeling coatings, splinters and patches where water no longer beads off. Shore Finish restores decks across Geelong, the Bellarine and the Surf Coast so they look good and are protected before the summer sun hits.

Signs your deck needs attention before summer

  • The timber has turned silvery grey or looks dry and faded
  • Water soaks into the boards instead of beading on the surface
  • The old stain or coating is peeling, flaking or patchy
  • Boards are rough, splintering or have raised grain
  • Mould, mildew or black marks have appeared over winter
  • Nails or screws are lifting, or some boards feel soft

If you can tick even two of these, your deck is due for a clean and recoat. Leaving it another season usually means more sanding and more repairs later.

Why Geelong and coastal decks wear out faster

Strong summer UV breaks down the protective coating and greys the timber. Along the coast, from Torquay and Jan Juc to Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads and Point Lonsdale, salt air and wind add to the wear. Then winter rain and shade let moisture and mould take hold. A deck that is cleaned and recoated regularly lasts far longer than one left until the boards start to fail.

How we restore a deck

  1. Inspect. We check the boards, fixings and any soft or damaged areas, and talk through the finish you want.
  2. Clean. We wash the deck to remove dirt, grey weathered fibres, mould and any loose old coating.
  3. Repair and prepare. Lifting nails and screws are punched down or replaced, and problem boards are flagged before any coating goes on.
  4. Sand. Where needed, we sand back to fresh, smooth timber so the new finish soaks in evenly.
  5. Stain or seal. We apply your chosen oil, stain or sealer in the coats the product needs, working with the weather so each coat can cure properly.
  6. Final check. We walk the deck with you and let you know how long to wait before putting furniture back.

Oil, stain or clear sealer?

Decking oil soaks into the timber and gives a natural look, but needs recoating more often. Tinted stains add colour, even out older timber and give extra UV protection. Clear sealers keep the timber’s original colour but are usually the least UV-resistant on a deck in full sun. The right choice depends on your timber, how much sun the deck gets and the look you want, and we will recommend what suits your deck when we quote.

When to book

Late spring is the ideal time. The timber has dried out after winter and the weather is settled enough for coatings to cure, and your deck is ready before Christmas and summer entertaining. Bookings fill quickly as the weather warms up, so it pays to get your quote in early.

Keeping your deck looking good

  • Sweep leaves and debris off regularly so moisture doesn’t sit on the boards
  • Wash the deck down at the end of winter
  • Recoat as soon as water stops beading, rather than waiting for the timber to grey
  • Use pads under pot plants and furniture legs

More than decks

While we’re there, we can also stain or paint fences, pergolas, verandahs and timber cladding, or take care of your exterior repaint, so the whole outdoor area is ready for summer.

Deck restoration FAQs

How often should a deck be recoated?

It depends on the product and how much sun and weather the deck gets. Decks in full sun or near the coast usually need recoating more often. A good rule is to recoat when water stops beading on the surface.

Can you restore a deck that’s gone completely grey?

Usually, yes. Greying is mostly on the surface, and cleaning and sanding back to fresh timber brings most decks back. We’ll tell you honestly at the quote if any boards need replacing.

Which areas do you service?

Geelong and surrounds, the Bellarine Peninsula and the Surf Coast, including Torquay, Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads, Highton, Belmont and Geelong West.
